We had six entries into this year's AV Competition, competing for the member-voted Tully-Jackson Cup

  • A Taste of Norway
  • Blackwater Graveyard
  • Feeding Time
  • My favourite photo season
  • My night sky
  • Try

Congratulations to Ian Smith for 'My night sky' which can be viewed from the above link. Thanks to everyone who contributed.

Paul introduced us to a method of controlling a camera from his laptop, using a cable and software, which would be very useful for studio work and testing such things as aperture/depth-of-field, changes of colour temperature, and the effect of lighting on a scene.

Paul then showed us some images shot in Venice, both from a Mask festival, and general images of the city and islands... and also camera-trap video of a badger climbing the fence!

Andy B showed us his subtle restorations of family images, showing his great Uncle and retelling some of the very moving history of wartime experience.

Mike showed us around some software he's been using, called Excire Foto - which helps find images based on a search query (such as Bananas !). It clearly has a role to play for those of us with thousands of images show over time which perhaps we haven't been labelling as we went along (guilty).

Featured image this blog is Mike's Northern Lights over Tromso.

Grace then showed some recent images from a visit to the V&A in Dundee - a great building to photograph, inside and out.

That concluded a busy and sociable evening, good to see so many members there.

In club news, note the following :

  • Next week is Project night in the Mill - if you've been working on a project please come along and tell us about it
  • The next Interclub competition is (from Mike) : "Reminder: 3 way inter club comp is on Thursday 20th at 7:30. The address is Beeslack High School, Edinburgh Rd EH26 0QF. It’s just past Glencore army barracks. On a long straight road turn left and drive past the front of the school, then turn right at the football pitches. The car park is at the rear of the school. Go through the open part of the building to reception. Hope we can muster a good turnout to support the club. "
  • Club AGM is 25th March at the Mill
  • April 26th is our Scavenger Hunt, in Haddington. Come along with family or friends. This will involve wandering around Haddington looking to photograph items off a task list set by Lorraine and Grace. (For example, last year's hunt had us looking for an elusive yellow car to photo, and a much easier to find red tractor...). Bring your own lunch to eat back at Poldrate.
  • Exhibition Images - the exhibition is fast approaching. We need a total of five images, of which three can be of 'anything' and two should be from 'The Lothians', submission date is 30th April. Mounting the images will take place 20th & 27th May, putting them up in St Mary's Parish Church will be 30th May, and the exhibition will open 31st May - for a couple of months.
Look out for an email sent by our Treasurer (on 24th Feb) that explains how to submit the images, sizing, etc.
  • A couple of weeks before Easter is the club trip to the Falconry centre at Rothiemurchus. I believe there is still one more place available if you want to sign up.
  • Finally this month's 'Members of the Month' images can be seen here - thanks, Ian and Pete.
