Fran showed us her images of the night sky, and her very interesting journey of learning and discovery since first falling in love with the heavens in Australia in 2017. Fran's images have been captured in the Dordogne, Cairngorm, Northumberland, and especially, closer to home, East Lothian. We saw images of Comet Neowise, the Milky Way, Orion and his Nebula, the Andromeda Galaxy, the Moon, Jupiter rising, the belt of Venus, and some great images of Aurorae. We heard about equipment challenges, weights on heavy tripods, the Skywatch Star Adventurer, and we learned some of Fran’s skills and techniques. For those members unlucky enough to join us, I’ll leave you to google the importance of the Bortle number (and why low is good), and I’ll tease you that you missed hearing about a Lobster Lens.

Next up, Sam showed us some breath-taking images of wildlife, much of it very local to us. Tits, grouse, kingfisher, deer, herons… and the landscapes of the Lammermuirs, Glenfinnan, the Moon, and Haddington.
Grace told us of her epic ‘photo every day’ project, which is now way beyond ‘a year with my camera’ – something like 2,500 images posted, at least one a day. We were treated to Landscapes, windsurfers, Duns, some old signs, knockers and chimneys, and Hume castle.
Elaine explained the competition schedule and rules – there’s a deadline coming up, for the first judged competition of the season. I (Andy) did a Location – Amisfield, a location everyone deserves to know well – with a few phone photos of flowers.
Finally Rudolf talked us through a favourite book, and a photographer that could easily become a favourite photographer of mine – Ragnar Axelsson. The book is ‘Faces of the North’ – Gesichter Des Nordens. Well worth a look. There was a reminder, too, of the images of Antarctica taken by Ponting. Rudolf finished with some of his own images of the Faroes – more please Rudolf.
