We hosted Musselburgh Camera Club this week, on a dark and stormy evening, for the Match an Image competition. Although the images presented were of high quality, and often received praise from the judge Stephen Ball .... the emphasis was on fun. Along with their photography skills, Musselburgh brought mischief and humour, which we tried to match along our images.
This was a first 'MAI' for me and it lived up to the reputation of being creative, light hearted, funny, and informative. Each team has a depleting pool of initially 40 images - collected for quality, quirkiness, and ability to match - in some way (or not) - an image presented by the other side. Points were award by the judge for a match (in his opinion) and a further point was possible for a quality image. The opposing side had 30 seconds to find a match from their pool - maybe colour, composition, subject - and then vociferously defend the choice in the face of scepticism and cynicism from the other side (who knew photographers are such an unforgiving bunch ?).
The game play is interesting - bring images that included the quirky and odd, and also some that might reasonably be matched to any generic image. Don't use up your generic ones too soon, don't get left with the quirky ones to match, ensure quality is up to scratch ... Stephen took the (ahem) critique in good humour, as did both sides (I think).
