I have always been a keen photographer. I got my first SLR – a Canon FTb QL in 1975 with money left to me by my grandma. I’ve stuck with Canon ever since through the transitions to autofocus (the Canon EOS 650 was so heavy!) and, more recently, digital. My current camera is a Canon EOS 700D, purchased in 2015. Blimey! That’s nearly 10 years ago!

I’ve used my camera as a picture diary to document life, events and travels. I rarely took photographs for photography’s sake – at least not until I joined Haddington Camera Club. Today – and this may be heresy – I find I increasingly use my phone (iphone 13 Pro) rather than my camera. It is so much lighter, smaller and convenient and, when I use both SLR and phone, when I get back home, I invariably find the photos taken on my phone are better. That probably says more about how good Apple phone cameras are and about my ineptitude with a ‘proper’ camera, than anything else!

I don’t do much post-production processing. My pleasure is being ‘out there’ taking pictures, not wrestling with complex software in front of a screen. That said, the Club has introduced me to Faststone, a very easy-to-use editing package and now I use Faststone extensively, even if it just for cropping or adjusting lighting.

I’ve selected the accompanying 10 photographs to illustrate the range of my photography. I’m very much a generalist who would prefer not to be pigeonholed as a ‘landscape’ or ‘nature’ or ‘street’ (or whatever!) photographer. I hope you enjoy them.
